Young volunteer wins £3000 for local charity
Murron McPherson, one of our incredible young volunteers, has shown true dedication by securing a £3,000 grant for Denis Law Legacy Trust through the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) with the support of another Lochside pupil. YPI is a nationwide programme that helps young people develop skills and confidence through hands-on learning experiences, empowering them to make a real difference in their communities.
Murron started her volunteering journey with DLLT in the summer of last year. Before that, she was one of our regular participants at our Lochside and Kincorth sessions. She is one of many young people who have followed our volunteer pathway, and she credits her experience with helping her build confidence by attending a variety of Streetsport sessions across Aberdeen, engaging with different young participants, and developing valuable communication skills. Reflecting on her experience, Murron shared that she “loves Streetsport—being a participant was great, but volunteering is even better because I feel more involved.” She added, “I have so much time for this charity because they’ve helped me in so many different ways, and I encourage everyone to come along.”
Determined to showcase the impact of our work in Aberdeen, Murron dedicated significant time and effort into preparing a well-researched presentation on why she thought Denis Law Legacy Trust deserved the £3,000 grant. She attended local Streetsport sessions, speaking with participants and volunteers to capture their experiences and highlight how our charity impacts their communities. She then set out to create an inspiring video that captured the impact of our sessions, showcasing what they mean to the young people who take part.
Her hard work paid off when she successfully secured the £3,000 grant, which will go directly towards supporting our free to access community programmes. Murron’s achievement not only benefits the trust but also serves as an inspiring example of how young people can drive meaningful change.
“A huge well done to Murron! I have worked and known Murron for a while now, and I have personally witnessed her amazing growth while taking on the role of a volunteer for DLLT. As a charity, we’re incredibly proud of her and grateful for her,” said Alaina Sinclair, volunteer officer.
