Young Streetsport group receive expert training insight

A group of Streetsport youngsters received a day of industry training after a collaboration between Denis Law Legacy Trust and Sparrows Group.

The young people, made up of Streetsport participants and volunteers from across Aberdeen, visited the Tyrebagger training centre on Thursday (April 14).

All aged 16-18, they are approaching the end of their school years and hadn’t experienced a similar industry insight after a Covid-affected higher education.

The day proved invaluable and included an inspiring talk from Dave Stewart, Fabrication Foreman, about his role at Sparrows plus all about the apprenticeship opportunities from Lisa Irvine and Rachelle Cardno.

They also had the exciting opportunity of using the advanced crane simulator; a hydraulic classroom session from graduate Ben Gordon; a look around the quarry and crane outside with an understanding of how to get into the offshore industry; and their hands on some Sparrows PPE.

Through the Streetsport programme, Denis Law Legacy Trust thrive to create more opportunities available for young people across Aberdeen. Two of the group that attended this training had already progressed to be volunteers while the others are also enthusiastic to learn and take the necessary steps to further employment or education.

Thanks so much to Dave (/Elvis!), Lisa, Rachelle, Ben and everyone else who helped make the day a success.
