Streetsport Marks Scottish Women And Girls In Sport Week 2024

September 30 marks the beginning of Scottish Women and Girls in Sport week 2024 and this year’s theme celebrates female leadership across the world of sport.

Highlighting the positive impact of sport on physical, mental and social health, Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week has been consistently supported by Aberdeen children’s charity, Denis Law Legacy Trust.

This year, in line with the theme of leadership, Denis Law Legacy Trust asked female staff and volunteers from the Trust’s Streetsport programme, which is run in partnership with Robert Gordon University, three questions for Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week:

1.      Who inspired you to take part in sport and why?

2.      What does being a leader mean to you?

3.      What is your message to young women and girls who want to take part in sport?

Jemma, Streetsport Volunteer

“Kelly Buxton inspired me to take part in sport as she was the first coach that actually invested time in me.”

“Being a leader means having a positive impact on others even if it’s something small.”

“My message for Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week is that there’s a place for everyone in sport so if you don’t like something at first then try and try again.”

Aimee, Operations Coordinator, Denis Law Legacy Trust

“My family inspired me as they have always been very sporty and believed that I would be good at a sport. They also thought I would benefit from being part of a team.”

“A leader is someone who listens, empowers and communicates well with others.”

“I would encourage women and girls to just go for it, even if it’s seems daunting, you never know what your potential might be and what you could achieve.”

Emma, Streetsport Volunteer

“My family inspired me to take part in sport. We are a very sport oriented family so, my dad and brother encouraged me to play football and both parents organised the beach park run so keeping active has always been there.”

“Being a leader is encouraging participation for all and always being positive.”

“My message is to take part and have fun!”

Alaina, Volunteer Officer, Denis Law Legacy Trust

“One of my teachers, Shannon McGregor inspired me because she played in a teacher vs pupils game and was the best player by far!”

“Being a leader means to help encourage people in an activity or lead them into feeling confident within themselves.”

Give it your all and don’t care about people’s opinions!”
