Case study: From Catalonia to Northfield

A Streetsport volunteer who hails from Catalonia has been in the spotlight recently after appearing in Universities Scotland campaign on internationalisation.

Elia Ulles, a forensic science student at RGU, has been volunteering with the Streetsport programme on Friday evening’s at Northfield for the past year having heard about the charity through friends.

Discussing her motivations for volunteering, Elia said: “I decided to volunteer for Streetsport because I wanted to give something back to the community during my time at university.

“Streetsport has allowed me to do this and I am in the position of being able to help others, while having a great time doing so.

“I’m still learning about the differences between the people of Scotland and Catalonia, and this opportunity has really helped me to adapt to life here.

“It has allowed me to see that everything is so much different, between the generations and cultures, but there are also many similarities.

“By engaging with the youths who take part in Streetsport, I think they have been able to learn about other cultures and can see how rich a place the world is. Things which may be normal for them, may not be for others.

“Volunteering at this programme has helped to build my confidence and meet so many new people, which I think is an invaluable experience for someone coming to study in a new city, far away from home.”

Streetsport are proud to welcome volunteers of all backgrounds and are always keen to recruit more. If you or someone you know would be keen to get involved then please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
